Tara, Queensland

April 2024

In April 2024, Rural Aid volunteers travelled to Tara in Queensland’s Western Downs to support farming families recovering from the devastating bushfires that swept through the region in late 2023. Fuelled by hot, dry and windy conditions, the fires burned through vast areas surrounding Tara, Wieambilla and neighbouring communities, destroying homes, fencing, livestock feed and critical farm infrastructure. The fires were among the most significant bushfire emergencies Queensland had experienced in years, with farming families facing enormous losses and a long recovery ahead after the flames tore through properties and rural landscapes.

During the Farm Recovery Event, 30 volunteers worked alongside nine local farming families to help with the clean-up and rebuilding effort still underway months after the fires. Volunteers assisted with repairing fences, clearing damaged areas and tackling practical farm jobs that helped relieve some of the pressure on families rebuilding their properties and livelihoods. Beyond the physical support, the event brought encouragement, connection and a reminder that rural communities across Australia stand together during times of hardship and recovery.
